Age 4–10
Paper, markers, thermometer template
15–20 min

What It Builds

Emotional awareness and self-regulation, helping kids gauge how big a feeling is and notice escalation early.

How to Do It

  1. 1

Draw a thermometer with zones from calm at the bottom to very upset at the top.

  2. 2

Label the levels (calm, a little bothered, frustrated, very upset).

  3. 3

Together, describe what each level feels like in the body.

  4. 4

Choose a calming strategy for each zone.

  5. 5

Use it in the moment by asking, "Where are you on your thermometer right now?"

Tips & Variations

  • Post it where everyone can see it.
  • Make one for the whole family.
  • Pair the higher zones with coping tools like deep breaths, a break, or asking for help.
