What It Builds

Nonverbal expression and processing of experiences. Arranging miniatures in sand lets children show inner worlds and work through events at their own pace.

How to Do It

    Set up a shallow tray of sand and a collection of small figures and objects.

  2. 2

    Invite your child to build a scene or world in the sand however they like.

  3. 3

    Let them play and arrange freely, with no instructions about what to make.

  4. 4

    Watch quietly and follow their lead.

  5. 5

    Afterward, invite them to tell you about their world if they want to.

Tips & Variations

  • Offer varied figures (people, animals, fences, trees, vehicles).
  • Resist interpreting or directing.
  • Let the same scene change over multiple sessions.
